Tiger Woods comeback odds

I wish I had the inside on this, but I don't. The Tiger Woods saga has got to be one of the more fun novelty bets in the market.

WHERE WILL TIGER MAKE HIS COMEBACK?

Ahead of Tiger Woods’ highly anticipated press conference at 3am Saturday AEDT, leading online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au has opened a market on where Tiger will make his long awaited return to golf.

The Masters is favourite at $1.55, followed by the Arnold Palmer Invitational at $2.25. He is listed at $101 to announce his retirement from golf.

“It’s really anyone’s guess, although we think the two most likely events are the Masters or the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he is the defending champion,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.

Bookies give up on Tiger Woods

I've never heard of bookies giving up before.

If there's a chance of them keeping their money, they'll usually have everything crossed - fingers, toes, whatever.

But the homepage of Centrebet reads thus:

Sportsbet has decided Tiger Woods is a moral and has paid out early regardless of whether he wins or loses. Applies to all outright wagers placed before 5:30pm Fri 13th.

Put it in the "strange, but true" category.

Tiger Woods firms in the betting

Following Tiger Woods’ 6-under round of 66 in the first round of the Australian Masters, Sportsbet.com.au has framed a market on Tiger’s total score for the tournament.

“From Tiger’s display today, we think around the low minus 20’s is about right,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.

Tiger’s total score in the 2009 Australian Masters
-15 or worse $11.00
-16 to -18 $4.25
-19 to -21 $3.75
-22 to -24 $3.00
-25 or better $4.00

In overall betting, Tiger has been $2.60 into $1.70 today following his blistering first round.

“Tiger has been well supported since markets opened, and we took a $50,000 bet on Tiger at $1.70 today during his round,” said Lane.

“Tiger is obviously the standout, although we think there’s great value to be had elsewhere as the greens will firm up over the weekend and it will be tough for everyone.”

Other sportsbooks have Tiger as short as $1.55 to win the tournament.

Tiger Woods in Australia

Here's the latest odds on the Australian Masters this weekend. Is Tiger really worth the investment?

Tiger Woods may be the best golfer in the world but not every punter rates him a certainty to win the Australian Masters with many taking shorts odds about the Tiger being tamed at Kingston Heath this weekend.

Sportingbet Australia is offering top odds of $2.60 about Woods but its CEO Michael Sullivan said punters were rushing to back the rest of the field at odds of $1.45.

“We have taken a lot of bets, including one of $20,000 at $1.45 , that someone other than Woods will be wearing the gold jacket come Sunday afternoon.

“It is a brave move taking $1.45 that the greatest golfer ever won’t defeat this field.

“However, he did blow up in the final round last week and there is a school of thought that the sand belt course won’t suit him.”

Punters are also backing that little known Australian golfer Anthony Painter 's 15 year-old course record of 64 will survive Tiger's attack on Kingston Heath.

“Tiger is a $3.75 chance to break Painter’s record or a $4.50 to equal the mark,” Sullivan said.

“ The Punters have lapped up the $2.00 about Painter’s mark proving too good for Tiger backing it in to $1.50.”

Is Tiger Woods a good golf bet?

Tiger Woods is undoubtedly one of the best golfers of all time. He is a credit to the sport, a fierce competitor, a noble sportsman, and a worthy champion.

But let’s open a can of worms. Is he really a good bet?

Let’s look at some of the statistics. In the next three tournaments he plays, Tiger will start at anywhere between $2.50 (Australian Masters) and $3.40 (US Masters).

That means at best, Tiger must win one in three tournaments for us to come out on top. At worst, he needs to win every second time he walks out.

While it’s a fair call to suggest he’s favourite each time he plays, it’s also fair to suggest it’s inhuman to finish first past the post each event.

Tiger has won 6 from 17 events this year. If we’d backed him in each one, we might be slightly ahead. We’d also be incredibly frustrated.

Here’s Tiger’s results:

March 3: 17th World Match Play.
March 15: 9th World Golf Championships
March 29: Won Arnold Palmer Invitational
April 12: 6th Masters Tournament
May 3: 4th Quail Hollow Championship
May 10: 8th The Players Championship
June 7: Won The Memorial Tournament
June 21: 6th US Open
July 5: Won AT&T National
July 19: Missed the Cut, British Open
August 2: Won Buick Open
August 9: Won Bridgestone Invitational
August 16: 2nd PGA Championship
August 30: 2nd The Barclays
September 7: 11th Deutsche Bank Championship
September 13: Won BMW Championship
September 27: 2nd The Tour Championship

If you invested in Tiger immediately after the British Open, it’s likely you’d have made your best profit. But as a long-term investment, chances are the bookies will be a little too wise.

A better bet for mine – if you study the golf – is to find a three-ball option you like.

Chances are you’ll find someone with good form who might be paired with a better-known name. In such cases, the form player will usually win with inflated odds.

Either that, or try the old roullette tactic of doubling up each time Tiger loses.
