Here's the latest from the bookmakers on Tiger Woods. Punters are willing to gamble, as we suggest they should, on a remarkable Tiger comeback.
Maybe the bet was an insurance premium by the folks at sportsbet who've agreed to refund all bets if Tiger wins.
$80,000 BET AS PUNTERS GO TIGER CRAZY
One punter is very confident Tiger Woods will return to golf at the US Masters in top form after backing him to collect nearly $500,000 at Sportingbet Australia.
The punter had $80,000 on Woods at $6.00 and Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said punters were backing Woods heavily in the 24 hours before tee off for the Masters.
“Tiger had been a little easy but punters have really stepped into him now with the bet of $400,000 to $80,000 joined by plenty of other bets including one of $10,000 and another of $7000 at $5.50” Sullivan said.
“Tiger had drifted from $4.50 out to $6.00 but within minutes of posting the $6.00, the punters absolutely smashed us.”
“Tiger’s involvement in the tournament has seen turnover on the golf go through the roof after we had seen a notable absence while he was away from the game.”
Sullivan said Woods had to respected but after nearly six months away from competitive golf, he was happy to take the big bets on fourteen time major winner.
“Tiger has achieved many things that no one else has ever been able to do but this is a huge ask and I am keen to take him on,” he said.
“The flip side of that is this is the most backable price Tiger has been for years, he was $3.00 for the Masters last year so $6.00 is big odds for the greatest golfer of all time.”

Tiger Woods action ... everybody wants a bit
Seems everyone wants a piece of Tiger Woods action.
Bookmakers in the UK are taking bets on whether Tiger will hit a tree with his first drive, or whether he'll kiss a blonde on the way to the tee. While this is an outrageous publicity stunt, there will be plenty of opportunities to increase the odds of winning for punters.
Sportingbet in Australia has some terrific exotics, including one which predicts how many birdies Tiger will hit (not how many females will be struck by his golf ball). 0-3 at $3+ isn't a bad option.
Tiger's at $1.08 to make the cut and $1.18 not to finish first.
Below is Victor Chandler's offer. We'll publish more as we hear of them:
Place a bet on the Outright Winner and if your selection fails to win, but finishes ahead of Tiger Woods Victor Chandler will refund your losing stake as a free bet!
Maximum refund £50 per player. Applies to win only bets and the win part of each-way bets. Applies to singles only, placed via telephone, internet or mobile. Does not apply to in-running bets. Applies to bets on outright market only placed from 30/03/10. Free bets credited 12/04/10.

Tiger Woods favourite for Masters
Bookies have been quick this morning to place Tiger Woods at the top of their lines for the Masters. They would have lost a heap to those willing to back that Woods would return for the event. Now, it seems, they'll be willing to take him on against a strong field.
Woods will no doubt be keen to get back on the golf course, and if he can make the cut, he's as good a chance as any to take out the tournament. Anybody who's played much sport will dismiss any theory that he might be a bit rusty. All the psychology will be firmly in his favour.
Here's the latest from Sportingbet:
GOLF: TIGER INSTALLED FAVOURITE FOR US MASTERS
Tiger Woods has been instantly installed as favourite for the US Masters after announcing he would return to golf at Augusta in April.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Woods’ dominance over the past decade meant he had to be favourite despite being out of the game for months.
“We are posting Tiger as a $4.50 favourite for the Masters and I am sure punters will be keen to back him,” Sullivan said.
“Woods was a $3.00 favourite for last year’s Masters so the time out has had an effect on his price.
“Tiger has the biggest following of any sportsmen among punters because he has looked after them so many times in the past and I am sure they will back him here.
“There is no doubt he will start the tournament as favourite and it would be a brave man to say he couldn’t win.”

Tiger Woods to surface in Augusta
This is a prime example of how bookmakers are diversifying their markets. They're asking whether Tiger Woods will play at the season's first major. Origin reports said he'd take 12 months off.
Here's the word from Sportsbet.com:
Following recent reports that Tiger Woods may play at the Accenture Match Play Championship next week, Sportsbet.com.au were quickly swamped by punters wishing to bet that Tiger would be a no-show.
“We put up $1.55 on Tiger not playing at the Accenture Match Play Championship, which was quickly smashed into $1.30,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.
“Given Accenture was one of the first companies to drop Tiger it would surprise if he made his comeback at this event.”
Talk has now focused on whether or not Tiger will tee it up at this year’s first Major - The US Masters - which begins on April 8 at Augusta.
“We think Tiger will make it back for the Masters and have installed him as a $1.35 favourite to play at Augusta, with $3.05 available on Tiger not to play the year’s first Major,” said Lane.

Tiger Woods firms in the betting
Following Tiger Woods’ 6-under round of 66 in the first round of the Australian Masters, Sportsbet.com.au has framed a market on Tiger’s total score for the tournament.
“From Tiger’s display today, we think around the low minus 20’s is about right,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.
Tiger’s total score in the 2009 Australian Masters
-15 or worse $11.00
-16 to -18 $4.25
-19 to -21 $3.75
-22 to -24 $3.00
-25 or better $4.00
In overall betting, Tiger has been $2.60 into $1.70 today following his blistering first round.
“Tiger has been well supported since markets opened, and we took a $50,000 bet on Tiger at $1.70 today during his round,” said Lane.
“Tiger is obviously the standout, although we think there’s great value to be had elsewhere as the greens will firm up over the weekend and it will be tough for everyone.”
Other sportsbooks have Tiger as short as $1.55 to win the tournament.

$100K bet on Tiger Woods
Australian punters are warming to Tiger Woods with a bet of $100,000 at $2.60 struck at Sportingbet Australia.
Woods had been a little easy with bookmakers but Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said punters had tumbled into him in the past 24 hours.
“He has been $2.75 to $2.50 with us in the past 24 hours as punters have really got behind as they have seen him hitting the course for practice,” Sullivan said.
“We took one bet to take out over $250,000 and there have been plenty of other bets in the $5000 to $20,000 range placed on him as well.
“Woods is always the best golfer in the field, it is just whether he hits it well and handles the course that is the risk.
“We are happy to keep laying him though as I am not so sure Kingston Heath will suit him.”
Sullivan also reported strong support for some of the Aussie contenders.
“Stuart Appleby has been the best backed of the locals, with bets including one of $100,000 to $2500, while there has also been good money for defending champ Rod Pampling and rising stars Michael Sim and Marc Leishman,” Sullivan said.
Sportsbet.com.au has released a range of markets on the 2009 Australian Masters. Also included below are a variety of novelty markets around hot favourite Tiger Woods.
“Tiger and Geoff Ogilvy have been by far the best backed to win the Masters,” said Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane.
“The 20 largest bets we’ve taken have all been on Woods, with a few decent bets on Ogilvy thrown in.
“Although, there have been some doubters who have jumped on the $11 offered on Tiger to miss the cut.
“Punters who want to take on Tiger but can’t narrow his slayer down can back everyone else in the field at $1.48. This option has been quite popular, with one punter laying down $20,000 on the rest of the field,” said Lane.

Tiger Woods in Australia
Here's the latest odds on the Australian Masters this weekend. Is Tiger really worth the investment?
Tiger Woods may be the best golfer in the world but not every punter rates him a certainty to win the Australian Masters with many taking shorts odds about the Tiger being tamed at Kingston Heath this weekend.
Sportingbet Australia is offering top odds of $2.60 about Woods but its CEO Michael Sullivan said punters were rushing to back the rest of the field at odds of $1.45.
“We have taken a lot of bets, including one of $20,000 at $1.45 , that someone other than Woods will be wearing the gold jacket come Sunday afternoon.
“It is a brave move taking $1.45 that the greatest golfer ever won’t defeat this field.
“However, he did blow up in the final round last week and there is a school of thought that the sand belt course won’t suit him.”
Punters are also backing that little known Australian golfer Anthony Painter 's 15 year-old course record of 64 will survive Tiger's attack on Kingston Heath.
“Tiger is a $3.75 chance to break Painter’s record or a $4.50 to equal the mark,” Sullivan said.
“ The Punters have lapped up the $2.00 about Painter’s mark proving too good for Tiger backing it in to $1.50.”
